At Desert Dog Project, our goal is to provide the best possible life for shelter dogs who face medical challenges. No dog should be denied the opportunity at a happy life due to euthanasia related to medical costs, which unfortunately is a problem we see far too often in the rescue world.

We are on a dedicated mission eliminate this issue by taking care of the most vulnerable and overlooked dogs in the system. As devoted partners of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control via our Shelter Dogs Medical Program, we work to fundraise care for county dogs in medical need. It is our commitment to transform this reality by providing the financial support needed for their medical care.

We aim to eliminate financial barriers that prevent deserving dogs from finding loving homes. We strive to ensure that lack of funds is never the reason they miss out on the chance for a better life.

Why is there such a need for shelter advocacy in Maricopa County?

Maricopa County is uniquely impacted by the nationwide dog overpopulation crisis. Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) takes in the second most stray and surrendered dogs of ANY shelter in the entire country. At any given time, they have over 800 dogs in their care.

As a public shelter that is considered a government entity, unfortunately MCACC cannot rely on large donations that many private shelters benefit from. They also must legally take in any dog that comes through their doors (meaning they don’t have the privilege of turning dogs away when at capacity). This makes it very hard to provide adequate attention, care, and medical resources for MCACC dogs.
